In Tennyson Ulysses bares his soul, and this is pos­ sible, as has been pointed out, because of the form of dramatic • soliloquy which Tennyson chose. This exposure of the driving force within an identifi· rhetorical dimension of Ulysses’ peroration, identifying itas a performance which, instead of being accepted as an inspirational creed, must be analysed as a piece of arguably coercive oratory. In Tennyson’s RapPearsall ture characterises the dramatic monologue as an inherently rhetorical form and asserts that ‘Ulysses seeks less the Ulysses is a tragic figure who dies while sailing too far in an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Tennyson combines these two accounts by having Ulysses make his speech shortly after returning to Ithaca and resuming his administrative responsibilities, and shortly before embarking on his final voyage.
